Old cemetery of St. Apollinaire

The site in the middle of the Dubašljansko Polje plain, the location of the original church of St. Apollinaire, patron saint of Dubašnica. The date of its construction is unknown. In the mid-15th century, the people of Dubašnica took it as a parish church, after which it was repaired several times and the sacristy next to the main altar was added (data from 1603) with the inscription stating that ‘…it was made by the master builder Sormilić in 1514’. There were six more altars. To this day, the cemetery and a bell tower remain. The master builders from Cres and Krk, Anton Sablić, Matija Muškatel, Luka Mladenac and Lodoviko Zidarić, constructed a magnificent bell tower in 1618, which has remained the symbol of Dubašnica to this day. There was a Glagolitic inscription with information about the construction, but it may have referred to the time when the bell tower was raised in height. It is a mighty stone construction (7 x 7 m) with horizontal cornices that divide it into four parts. On the third part are bifora mullioned windows with Gothic capitals. The former pyramidal top of the bell tower was struck and destroyed by lightning. At the foot of the bell tower, following the example of local folk architecture, a place for burial was built.
The church in this location was quite far from all the villages. In addition, malaria appeared in the area, so it was decided to build a new church in 1855. The stone material was transferred to the village of Bogovići, where a new church of St. Apollinaire was built.
